Precision Cardiovascular is developing an implantable system for repeated pulmonary artery pressure measurement, with physiological context to support clinical interpretation outside the hospital.

Mission Statement

Heart failure changes over hours and days, and a single reading can miss it. PCV is developing a pulmonary artery pressure monitoring system designed to measure repeatedly across daily life, with the rhythm, activity and posture context needed to interpret each reading. The work brings together cardiovascular medicine, implant engineering, radio-frequency systems and data science.

How We Started

From an Imperial College sensor to a system for heart failure monitoring

Pre-2021

A battery-free implant takes shape

A new sensor, born at Imperial College London

At Imperial College London, high Q-factor Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) pressure-sensing technology was developed into a miniaturized and implantable cardiovascular sensor by leveraging methods already established in wireless and industrial applications. The battery-free implantable sensor was powered and interrogated wirelessly from outside the body using significantly less energy than for similar predecessor implantable sensors. This work was peer-reviewed and independently characterised prior to any commercial investment.

PCV began at Imperial College London with a novel pressure sensor, invented by Dr Reza Bahmanyar and advanced by Professor Chris McLeod, designed to remain accurate throughout an implant’s lifetime.

2021 – 2023

Precision Cardiovascular is founded

Precision Cardiovascular is founded

Precision Cardiovascular was established in the UK to translate the Imperial College London research into an implantable cardiovascular medical device. The foundational technology was formally licensed into the company, and PCV built its R&D base at the Magdi Yacoub Institute, Harefield, with Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub as Clinical Advisor. Early technical work focused on characterising the inherited technology and establishing manufacturing partnerships for the core SAW sensor component.

2024

Building the foundations for a clinical device

Building the foundations for a clinical device

PCV carried out a structured assessment of its first-generation system, evaluating implant integration, implant-to-reader communication, and reader hardware under controlled conditions. This period also established the formal quality and regulatory infrastructure needed for the development of an implantable cardiovascular medical device, including initiation of an ISO 13485 quality management system.

2024 – 2025

A purpose-built second-generation system

A purpose-built second-generation system

Learnings from chronic preclinical studies; including implant anchoring, coating, and long-term stability, as well as reader performance, informed a deliberate move to a second-generation architecture, built from the outset around clinical form factor, manufacturing traceability, and applicable regulatory and evidence requirements.

Present

Toward first-in-human

PCV is preparing for a planned first-in-human clinical investigation, with final non-clinical testing and verification underway, working with a contract manufacturing partner and leading cardiovascular clinical institutions.

Disclaimer: The PCV system is currently in development and has not been approved or cleared for commercial use.

Our Values

The principles behind PCV

Clarity in the data

We design around the measurement a clinician needs, the context required to interpret it and the evidence supporting each conclusion.

Earlier visibility

We are developing repeated monitoring to give care teams a clearer view of haemodynamic change between clinic visits.

Evidence before claims

We test the device, the workflow and the interpretation against defined requirements before making clinical claims.
